Due to choices made during and after the Sector One civil war (in which his mother was killed and Mad experienced intense trauma) Mad broke with his family, took his father's last name, and moved to Sector Four. Though he's tried to leave the responsibility of the Rios family legacy behind him, most of devout residents of Sector One still consider him a revered leader--perhaps even the true heir to his grandfather's power.
